What is Roller Derby?
Popular belief would have you think that the sport pretty much consists of a bunch of women bashing each other around a skating rink. Although this is certainly a component of the sport, roller derby is actually quite a tactical sport with an extensive 43-page rulebook. A bout is divided into two-minute jams, and the teams each field five players. The roles on each team of five include a jammer, a pivot, and three blockers. The jammers begin behind the rest of the pack and the goal for them is to lap around the pack as many times as possible. The teams do their best to assist their jammer through the pack while attempting to block the opposing jammer from the other team. While it is a full body contact game, moves such as elbows, headbutting, tripping and the like are not allowed and the instigator will be fouled and sent off to the penalty box. The gear needed for this sport can generally be found in most skate shops. Although it can cost quite a bit, a good roller derby set will last you many years and as the sport becomes more popular, is becoming more affordable. You can also upgrade your gear the more time you spend playing and the more seriously you compete. Any kind of skating helmet will work for roller derby, although cycling helmets can’t be used. You should try on helmets before purchasing as it needs to be a snug fit and not fall off easily or slide around your head. Since roller derby is an impact sport and you will fall quite a bit, aggressive skate pads are necessary, including knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. A mouthguard is generally used as well.
